"Thoughts, that are shared, will increase exponentially"

A 21st Century Method to Better Manage Your Time

Hiring a person from India to manage my life.

I was both disturbed and intrigued at the same time by the thought. So I bought the book “The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich” to understand more.

After reading the chapter on virtual assistant (VA), I was confirmed that the thought is possible but also, the reason for the disturbance had been justified. The person from India would potentially know more about me than my family.

And here are the reasons for doing so.

1) Learning to manage other people’s time

In the chapter ‘Outsourcing life’, Timothy (the author) stated that:

Getting a remote personal assistant is a huge departure point and marks the moments that you learn how to give orders and be commander instead of the commanded.

Getting a VA was not purely just to better manage your time. It’s also a way to train yourself to manage other people’s time. Because you understand that for every hour the person use to do your stuffs, you will be charged. So you have to be mindful on the stuffs that you want them to do.

On top of that. you will have a chance to learn to give proper and clear instruction. Mind you, it may seem easy to give instruction but there are lots of people who don’t know how.

2) Is it worth doing the task yourself or getting other people to do it?

Timothy also explained that you might be wasting your own resource for things that you can get the VA to do.

Take a very simple example.

If you aim to earn S$5000 monthly, then your hourly rate will be S$31.25 (S$5000/4 weeks/ 5 days a week/ 8 hrs a day). If you are doing something that you can get someone else to do at a lower cost, then you are wasting your own resource.

Here are 2 sites that are recommended in the book

a) www.elance.com

b) www.yourmaninindia.com

You can also read about Timothy through his blog.

Ending the post on a fun note. The book mentioned that the editor-at-large at Esquire magazine (AJ Jacobs) even asked his VA to write an apology email to his wife for something that he forgot to do. And the wife accepted his apology all because of the lovely letter written by the VA.

Time to hire a virtual personal assistant! especially the husbands…
